  •  1001 Leif Erikson – Erik the Red- explores North America
  • 1492 Christopher Columbus sails to America for Europe.
  • 1501 Amerigo Vespucci explores South America and names the region
  • 1542 Spanish explorer, Hernando de Soto explored Gulf Coast , discovered the Mississippi.
  • 1570 Spanish Admiral Pedro Menendez de Aviles founded St Augustine.
  • 1587 English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh founded the Roanoke Colony, three years later the colony was found deserted.
  • 1607 British colonists founded the Jamestown settlement on May 14, this colony was named after King James I of England. They established Jamestown for profit. $$$
  • 1620 Plymouth Colony, founded by a group of Separatists and Anglicans, who together later came to be known as the Pilgrims was established. They arrived on the Mayflower. They were aided by Squanto, a Native American of the Patuxet people,and the Wampanoag tribe. The first Thanksgiving was celebrated by the colonists and the native Indians in 1621. Chief Samoset was key to their survival. They came for religious freedom.
  • 1699 The French create the colony of Louisiana. Named after King Louis XIV, King of France from 1643–1715.
  • 1733 The British have established 13 American colonies. Please name them.
  • 1754–1763 The French and Indian War was fought between the British colonies and New France.A prominent new commander arises.
  • 1773 The British colonists got mad about the new taxes imposed on them by Great Britain. A group of people threw three shiploads of tea into Boston Harbor. This was one of the major events that led to the Revolutionary War.
